COALITION ANNOUNCES $8 MILLION INVESTMENT IN NEW HAWTHORN SPORTS PRECINCT
A major sporting precinct at Swinburne Senior Secondary College in Hawthorn will receive a significant upgrade thanks to Coalition Government funding of $8 million secured under the Community Development Grants Programme.
The Fritsch Holzer Park redevelopment will provide much needed new facilities for local sporting clubs, Swinburne Senior Secondary College students, local residents and community organisations.
It will include two indoor courts, change rooms, canteen/teaching kitchen for students, a sports pavilion, a redeveloped oval and supporting infrastructure to provide for community outdoor seasonal sports. In addition, a new public space will be created, improving the interface between Fritsch Holzer Park and Camberwell Road.
The current facilities are in a state of disrepair and today’s announcement follows a feasibility study conducted by Boroondara Council and Swinburne Senior Secondary College.
The new facility will be used by over 4000 people per week, representing a range of sports including basketball, netball, football, cricket, soccer, futsal, table tennis, martial arts, badminton, volleyball and dance. Importantly, the new facilities will also cater for wheelchair athletes.
Swinburne Senior Secondary College’s support for this project will maximise community use of the sport and recreation facilities. The school use will be during the day and community use outside of school hours.
I am delighted that the Coalition Government is contributing to this major infrastructure project as it will benefit our entire local community. It is only made possible with a strong economy.
