It was great to visit the North Balwyn Cricket Club at Macleay Park on 9 March and meet with Club President, Neil Darymple, Clinton Kennon from Cricket Victoria, players, their families and volunteers. Established more than 90 years ago, Club fees for the first season were 10 shillings and six pence! A very active Club, its membership slumped during WW2 when 37 members enlisted in the armed forces. The Club, which recently established an all-girls junior team, is one of the larger inner east cricket clubs with players aged from 5 to 65. In the 2018/19 season, the North Balwyn Cricket Club fielded 5 senior teams, 10 junior teams, 4 veteran teams, a T20 blast (Under 10s) and a Master Blasters program (Under 8s). It was great to have a chat with the players about the semi finals game they were about to play, bat a few balls with some pretty impressive young bowlers and help the team uncover the pitch so that the game could get started. Also in attendance were Member for Kew Tim Smith, Boroondara Councillor Felicity Sinfield and former Maling Ward Councillor Dick Menting.
